Secrets of the Skin

Cosmetic acne

Acne is an integral part of the struggles many of us face. It is caused by many factors, such as stress, hormonal disorders, skin infections and cosmetics. Today we will focus on the latter, that is, cosmetics that can cause cosmetic acne.

Cosmetic acne is an ailment caused by the use of skin care products. Some cosmetics may contain ingredients that clog pores and contribute to acne – the most common are creams, oils, powders, foundations, blushes, concealers, as well as sunscreens. Such substances are called ‘comedogenic’. These include all heavy waxes, such as beeswax, and other emollients, such as petroleum jelly and lanolin. In addition, they include silicones (e.g. Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, PEG-12 Dimethicone, PEG/PPG-25/25 Dimethicone) and isopropyl alcohols (Isopropyl Alcohol).

These substances accumulate in the sebaceous gland, making it difficult for sebum to escape. This process can contribute to the formation of acne lesions.

Other causes may be allergic reactions to certain cosmetic ingredients or skin irritation caused by excessive use of skin care products.

Cosmetic acne manifests itself similarly to acne vulgaris. The most common symptoms include small, red pimples (usually white heads), blackheads (black or white dots) and redness and irritation of the skin. It is most common on the face, but can also occupy other areas where cosmetics are applied, such as the neck, décolletage and back. It develops over several weeks or months and can persist for an unusually long time if appropriate measures are not taken.

  • Choose the right skin care – read the ingredients! Pay attention to ensure that the cosmetics you use are not comodogenic. Make sure they are not rich in mineral oils, lanolin, isopropyl alcohols and silicones, which can contribute to clogged pores.
  • Cleanse your skin gently but thoroughly – Regular facial cleansing is key. Always wash off makeup before bedtime, and choose mild products that do not affect the skin’s pH to cleanse it. For this, you can use our Cleansing Milk – it’s a creamy emulsion designed to deeply cleanse the skin without disturbing the hydrolipidic balance. Based on ingredients naturally occurring in the skin. Gently and effectively cleanses, maintaining the balance of the skin. It moisturizes and perfectly prepares the skin for further care.
  • Care routine – less is more. The more products you put on your skin, the more likely it is to irritate and block the sebaceous glands’ mouths. Stick to simple routines, use the cosmetics you need.
  • Test – if you have a suspicion that a product may be the cause of skin changes, conduct a test. Apply the product to a small area of skin for a few days to see if a reaction appears.
  • Consult a dermatologist – if the symptoms of cosmetic acne persist despite changes in cosmetics and skin care routine, it is worth consulting a dermatologist. A specialist can offer more targeted treatment and help identify potential allergies to cosmetic ingredients.
