What do you wash your face with? It’s more important than you think!

In our daily skin care routine, we often focus on creams, serums and masks, forgetting the basics. And yet, how you wash your face is crucial to the health of your complexion and the effectiveness of your entire subsequent routine. It’s the first step that can help your skin – or harm it with further skin care.

How to wash your face – step by step with care for the hydrolipid barrier

The skin has a natural, slightly acidic pH – about 5.5. This value is not accidental: it keeps the skin microbiome in balance and protects the hydrolipid barrier, the natural protective layer of the epidermis. When this barrier is compromised, the skin becomes more sensitive, dry, prone to inflammation and ages faster.

Many traditional soaps have a pH reaching 11-12, which is alkaline and drastically disrupts the skin’s natural balance. After such a wash, the skin may seem “clean” and squeaky – but this signals that it has been over-dried and stripped of its natural lipids.

What products should I choose to wash my face?

🫧 Syndets (synthetic detergents).

These are modern, mild cleansers that have a pH close to the skin and are ideal for all skin types, including sensitive and problematic skin. Despite the name “synthetic,” they are not harmful – on the contrary, their composition is designed to protect the skin barrier.

Look for it on the labels:

  • “Syndet”
  • “pH neutral” or “for sensitive skin”.
  • No soap (soap-free)
  • No SLS/SLES (instead more gentle substances like coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside)

🌱 Products with added soothing substances

If your skin tends to be reactive, choose cleansers that contain:

  • Panthenol – soothes irritation and promotes regeneration,
  • Allantoin – soothes and moisturizes,
  • Ceramides – rebuild the protective barrier,
  • niacinamide – strengthens the protective functions of the skin.

What to avoid?

  • Ordinary soaps (especially body or “antibacterial” soaps ) – have a high pH, are drying and can lead to disruption of the microbiome.
  • Products with denatured alcohol high in the composition – can dry and irritate the skin.
  • Strong detergents like SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) -especially in face products-can be too aggressive.

The effects?

If you start with proper cleansing:

  • The skin will be less dry,
  • It is less likely to react with irritation,
  • You need fewer “repair” cosmetics, and that’s the easy way to skin minimalism!
  • Your care will become simpler and more effective.

A quick note to write down:

✅ Choose cleansing products with a pH close to 5.5
✅ Look for syndets, micellar gels, soap-free foams
✅ Avoid alkaline soaps and aggressive detergents
✅ Look for ingredients that soothe and support the skin barrier. Take care of the basics and learn how to wash your face consciously – your skin will thank you for it.
